This fall, Ms. Carmen Buller, FFA teacher at West Platte School District started a Rotary Interact Club in coordination with Weston Rotary.  To date, Ms. Buller has 28 members in the Interact Club at West Platte.  Carmen has a long history of Interact Club involvement in her teaching career from Savannah, to Cameron, to West Platte.

Weston Rotary and the Interact Club will work hand-in-hand as the year progresses.
Since 2014, The Rotary Club of Excelsior Springs has held a raffle that has raised close to $10,000 benefiting various schools, organizations, and local causes.  You can read a story published by the Excelsior Citizen featuring the clubs efforts by clicking here.

A Note From Our District Governor

The clubs across Northern Missouri (and across the world) have so many great programs going on, that sometimes we may not appreciate the full impact of everything Rotary does.
In September, I had the privilege of visiting several of the clubs in District 6040. Excelsior Springs has a fun group that is small, but very dedicated to their community and to Rotary. Gladstone has a lively and fun atmosphere in a great location (and rings the bell quite early in the morning!).
Lee’s Summit offered unrivaled hospitality through a reception with their board of directors the night before their regular meeting, which was quite a production with nearly 100 in attendance (and that’s where one goes to hear all of the latest happenings in town). The Lee’s Summit Club is active and has committees working on projects in community service, international service, local fundraising, The Rotary Foundation, youth services, membership, public image, and more… What a great group!
Independence showcased the monthly Rotary theme of Literacy by having a book review during the meeting (plus live music to kick off the planning for their Mardis Gras fundraiser). Higginsville was very welcoming and had a nice crowd, including 2 cute puppies.  Parkville has great social media and web presence, as well as strong tradition of participation in Rotary Friendship Exchange, which our district is excited about relaunching this Rotary year (information will be sent out soon about our team that we will fill to travel to Africa)
Remember that October 24 is World Polio Day. Whether your club and members participate by donating to PolioPlus (through Purple Pinkie donuts or another way), holding and publicizing an awareness event, or by asking local elected officials to give a proclamation, there are numerous ways that everyone in the district can participate.
The Rotary Foundation Dinner on November 9 at the Argosy is quickly approaching. It’s not too late for clubs to sponsor a table or to donate silent auction items, or for individuals to purchase tickets to attend. Everyone is also invited to purchase a raffle ticket (online at www.rotary6040.org).  Larry Lunsford will be the keynote speaker, and members of the Paul Harris Society will be invited to mingle with Larry at the pre-dinner reception.
"The structure of world peace cannot be the work of one man, or one party, or one nation...it must be a peace which rests on the cooperative effort of the whole world."- Rotarian Franklin D. Roosevelt

Disaster Relief
Once again, our Rotary family and neighbors have been stricken by a natural disaster. As specific needs develop within the zone, we will communicate that information to you. You can also review the relief information that is posted on The Disaster Network of Assistance Rotary Action Group (DNA RAG) website. We are not quite three months into the 2024-25 Rotary year, and a second devastating hurricane has caused widespread serious damage and loss of life in several of our districts, including those in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. The damage is massive and ongoing, and more than 60 people have lost their lives so far.

Annual Foundation Dinner
The annual Foundation Dinner is just around the corner!  To register and purchase individual tickets to the event, please click here:  https://portal.clubrunner.ca/50028/Events/district-6040-foundation-dinner-2024.  Many clubs will choose to sponsor a table at the Foundation Dinner.  Check with your club leadership to see if they are going to do that.   If your club is sponsoring a table that you will be sitting at, you do NOT need to register for an individual ticket. Another way you can support the event is to purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win a 5-night stay at an all-inclusive luxury resort in Cabo San Lucas in Mexico and airfare (estimated value $5,310).  Tickets are $100 each and sales will be limited to only 200.  The winning ticket will be drawn at the Foundation Dinner but you don’t have to be present to win.  To purchase your raffle ticket(s), click here:  https://tinyurl.com/6040FoundationDinnerRaffle

A Moment for Peace - Action is Within Our Grasp
The heartbreak of school shootings numbs us.  Killing on the streets reaches into Rotary clubs as Governor Erik reported in his August newsletter.  It angers, frustrates, us and makes us powerless.  And we search for what we can do as “solutions” seem out of our grasp.  But, action doesn’t have to be out of our grasp.

A small group of Rotarians will gather in October to design a district-wide Gun Safety Program with the goal of decreasing childrens’ and adults quick or easy access to guns.  The charge to this group of people will be to design a district-wide program that can be implemented by any size club, in any location within the district, with partners who advocate for gun safety, using multiple methods to distribute information and gun safety equipment/locks.  If you are interested in serving our children and increasing gun safety by designing this project, please contact Cassy Venters at cdventers@me.com by October 16.

World Polio Day
World Polio Day is October 24th, and District Governor Erik McGuire has challenged each Club to participate in an activity for Polio Plus.  This year to date there have been 16 cases of Polio in Pakistan and 17 in Afghanistan confirmed, and other areas are now being reported. To help raise funds for our goal of eradicating Polio, we started a new Polio Plus Society in our District last year and details of that are:
