By DG Dan Hall - To borrow from the old 4-H Club motto: “To Make the Best, Better” is my challenge to District 6040 Rotary Club members and leaders. How can we as members and leaders act on this challenge?

First, we can look at what is still in that “things to do” list from the first half of this Rotary year. Here are some things which come to mind you might want to consider:  1) Schedule, with your local High School Speech Teacher, a student presentation/ club program where the best “4-Way Test” speeches are given. Do this as a January or February club program and let your members select the best speech to send to the district speech contest, 2) Meet with local high school administrators to establish an Interact Club, 3) Recruit a local high school student for a short term (4 weeks) Youth Exchange in another country (application deadline Feb. 15), 4) Recruit a high school sophomore student for the next Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (application deadline March 1) , 5) Plan to send your President Elect and Secretary Elect to the Show Me Rotary (PETS/SETS) training in Jefferson City, 6) Submit Presidential Citation and the Changemaker Award forms to the District Governor (deadline is March 31), 7) Choose a local project for use of a District Simplified Matching Grant which is up to $1,500 (deadline is April 15), 8) Recruit an Ambassadorial Scholar for 2012/2014 school year…for details contact jogooch@aol.com, (deadline March 31), 9) Provide the District Governor danhall6040@att.net  your 2012/2013 Club Officer contact information.

Second, we can consider what can be done during the next several months to make your club’s year still “better.”  Here are some considerations:  1) Ask each member to invite at least one potential member to a club meeting during January, 2) Ask each member to give something more to The Rotary Foundation of  Rotary International, 3) Look within to “embrace” giving toward polio eradication, 4) Review your club’s goals for achieving the Presidential Citation and the 2011/2012 Changemaker Awards,  5) Clubs interested in hosting the Romanian Group Study Exchange team in May should contact Cassy Venters

cdventers@me.com 6) Plan to send a club delegation to the May 17/19, 2012 District Conference to be held in Lee’s Summit, MO..

Now, just when you were thinking it was time to “coast,” here I am asking you to accelerate your service to others.  Yes, now is the time where we must “reach within” for that second breath to race on through the finish line. That way we can, indeed, “make the best – better.”
