As usual, 2019 RYLA did not disappoint, it was the largest ever!  180 students from around the state came together for two separate experiences.
This year the South Kansas City Rotary Club was able to send three exceptional students from the Grandview C-4 School District to RYLA. Taylor Jones (10), EJ Atkins (11), and Jarri Brooks (11) all attended the second session of RYLA.  Here’s how Grandview High School sophomore Taylor Jones, describes her experience “One word that sums up my experience with Ryla is amazing. I loved every second even though at first I was skeptical of doing group activities. My counselors were such great people. I've never met an adult who didn't treat me like I wasn't their equal.”  Juniors, EJ and Jarri had similar RYLA experiences that they felt were eye-opening.
Through RYLA, Grandview High School junior, EJ Atkins, learned some things about himself.  “I learned a lot about myself in many new aspects and ways.  It opened my mind up to so much more.”  Taylor and Jarri share this feeling as well, both of them learned new things about themselves. Grandview High School junior, Jarri Brooks, stated, “My favorite activity was probably when my group got really deep and expressed ourselves and upbringing.  It was really touching and I felt like all the trust in the world was made in that very moment.”  Jarri is speaking of the Power of Stories which is a time when the teams really become family.  Taylor, agrees that this was a very impactful activity.

Here’s what EJ would tell a classmate who is considering attending RYLA, “Go and take the opportunity.  It is such a once in a lifetime thing that you have to consider.  Your expectations and what you think might happen will be blown away.  The people are amazing and the experience is awesome.”  Jarri says, “Use RYLA as an opportunity to be the best version of yourself.   I bet you’ll leave RYLA better than when you showed up.” Taylor said, “I would tell them that this experience will change them for the better!” I think that about sums it up, RYLA...it’s epic!”

Each of these students are college bound with bright futures.  There is no doubt that RYLA has left a lasting impression on each of these students.
