World Polio Day is October 24th, and District Governor Erik McGuire has challenged each Club to participate in an activity for Polio Plus. This year to date there have been 16 cases of Polio in Pakistan and 17 in Afghanistan confirmed, and other areas are now being reported. To help raise funds for our goal of eradicating Polio, we started a new Polio Plus Society in our District last year and details of that are:
Polio Plus Society District 6040:
In our Charter year in 2023-2024, we had 178 Rotarians that donated at least $100.00 to Polio Plus and are Charter Members! Attached is a list of those Rotarians and thank you for your donation. If you would like to become a Polio Plus Society Member and pledge to give at least $100.00 per year by October 24, 2024, please submit an Application which is attached. If you have already given $100.00 or more since July 1st of this Rotary year, you can apply for the Membership and also become a Member of our Polio Plus Society. Once I receive your Application, you will receive a Polio Plus Society Red Pin that has been created along with a Certificate that shows you are a Member in the Polio Plus Society of District 6040. To help us make sure proper credit is given, you will need your Club Number and your Rotary ID number to fill in on the Application. Please complete the Application and then send to my email. Current Members of Polio Plus Society, please make your donation for this year. See below for the matches we can receive from the District and Rotary International if donations are received by October 25th.
World Polio Day- October 24th:
Just a few of the activities that Clubs have done in the past for World Polio Day are:
1. Work with the City or County to try and obtain a Resolution to declare that October 24th is World Polio Day. A sample Resolution is attached.
2. Billboards are a great way to show support of World Polio day also.
3. Purple Pinkie Donuts - We have been working with our Partners at Dunkin Donuts and will be doing the Donuts again this year. They have several locations in the Kansas City area, We will be delivering the Donuts during the week of October 21st-25th on your Club meeting date, so that you can have Donuts that morning to pick up for your Members. A Flyer is attached along with your Clubs Order form. Each box is $25.00 with 10 donuts. Club members will need to collect the orders and cash or checks payable to the Club. Please email the Order form for your Club to me by October 4th. Clubs will then mail one check for the total payable to the Rotary Foundation to my address shown on the form. Additional information is on the form.
4. Pints for Polio, Pars for Polio, Night Golf, 5K Walks, Pennies for Polio, Cornhole for Polio, and a Bowling Tournament are just a few more activities that Clubs have done to help raise money for Polio Plus.
Tucson Bike ride
Dan Gabbert with the Rotary Club of Lee's Summit has an opportunity for Bike riders in our District. Information from Dan:
In November I'll return to Tucson for a 100+ mile bike ride with over 9,000 other cyclists - and I'm looking for other District 6040 Rotarians to come along! We'll be raising money for Polio Plus along with almost 100 other Rotarians. The local Rotary District 5500 hosts an amazing dinner the night before and coordinates activities for Rotarians who are participating.
Please forward this email to all of your club members (or at least those who own a bike!) - I'm hoping to get more D6040 Rotarians to make an impact - both financially and in the number of riders - in Tucson this November 23rd. For 41 years el Tour de Tucson has attracted thousands of riders and this year will be no exception! The weather promises to be awesome! The routes are comfortable for cyclists of any caliber! (You can ride 30, 62 or 100 miles.) The fellowship is amazing! The dinner is a great experience! (Get a selfie with RI President/CEO John Hewko!) The cause is second to none - Eradicating Polio!! If you have even a slight interest in joining, please contact me and I will answer any questions you have or put you in contact with the District 5500 coordinator. My goal is to have D6040 well represented among the Rotarians from all over the country who will be in Tucson. Expect to meet Rotarians from CA, AZ, NM, MA, IN, IL, MO, Mexico and more! Please reach out with any level of interest or questions, Or, support Polio Plus and the D6040 riders in Tucson by going to: Dan Gabbert Rotary Club of Lee's Summit District 6040 Annual Fund Chair 816 309 5626 |
SO WE KNOW ALOT OF YOUR CLUBS DO SPECIAL ACTVITIES FOR POLIO PLUS AND THANK YOU! FOR EVERY $100.00 THAT IS RAISED PRIOR TO OCTOBER 25, 2024, OUR DISTRICT WILL MATCH THAT WITH AN ADDITIONAL $100.00. ROTARY INTERNATIONAL WILL THEN MATCH WITH AN ADDITIONAL $50.00 BRINGING THAT TOTAL TO $250.00. THE GATES FOUNDATION WILL THEN MATCH AND DOUBLE THAT AMOUNT BRINGING THE GRAND TOTAL FOR EACH $100.00 RAISED TO BE $750.00 FOR POLIO PLUS!
If you have any questions about any of these items, please email or call me. Good luck and lets have the area of District 6040 know all about Rotary and Polio Plus!
